Alvin Burridge - Biography

My Journey Here

I am currently painting full time in a variety of mediums primarily in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. I am also looking to do direct work outside, and am now using water miscible oils for that process. My painting style tends toward modern realism, using my photographic images primarily as an initial base of reference, I often combine multiple images or elements from individual shots to create entirely new compositions for painting on canvas. This provides a broad opportunity to connect to a subject and more fully communicate my feelings that came from experiencing the scene.

Growing up in Eastern Asia, living in Manila, Hong Kong, and mostly Tokyo Japan, during high school I studied photography, architectural drafting, and design, and was constantly exposed to the Art of Asia as my parents were avid collectors. Those early experiences led to formal training as a Studio Art major at Middlebury College in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont, which included studies in art history, design and composition, figure drawing, oil painting, printmaking, and steel sculpture. My foundational learning experiences with all the professors and instructors there (especially the resident studio artists) was like being immersed in a world of art itself. After a business career that entailed traveling around the world while raising 3 children, in 2020 we realized our lifelong dream to live where we could see and feel the Atlantic Ocean, I began my new journey as a full-time artist. With enthusiastic encouragement from my family and the blessing of my most gracious better half, I am exhilarated to be painting again with the passion and focus that it truly deserves.

I have always been influenced by my surroundings and the curiosity of what I see around me to inform my work. Living so close to the water and its interconnected tributaries, with all the beaches and shore side activities of nearby communities providing a constant and bountiful source of inspiration. The real natural beauty in the things that I see and experience drives me to synthesize and interpret them, expressing and exposing those wonderful fleeting moments that just happen to come our way. As many have said before, it is a humbling process of persistence and unlimited learning in every effort, but to be immersed in that connected state of being, and then even entertaining the possibility of passing that feeling along through something that one creates, is a truly divine gift at any age.

UPDATE (1-21-26):

I have very generously been given a large supply of Royal Talens COBRA water miscible oil paint (WMO), along with WMO mediums and a bunch of fantastic Rosemary & Co brushes! Wanting to express some of the experiences from a recent trip to Ireland, I chose a scene of my wife strolling down a characteristic sloping alley in Kilkenny and is called "Petronella" which is the name of the restaurant/bar on Butter Slip Lane depicted in the painting. I will be continuing the Ireland series with the view of a sunny rain shower from a point on Lough Inagh in Connemara County, and then a grand vista of the ocean cliffs at Dùn Aonghasa on Inis Mór of the Aran Islands. Enjoy!

*NEW*: I have also turned on and implemented the online purchasing of prints through this website. It is still in "Beta" stage, but I have ordered one in the same size as the original on rolled canvas paper. The process went very smoothly using payment via PayPal. The resulting print came under 2 weeks from the order in a rolled up tube and the quality was very good. Please go ahead and give it a try if you would like your own copy of a painting in my gallery in a custom size and even in a frame of your choosing.
